Soulcaster 2
Cost: 3 dollars
Ironically, I just beat Soulcaster 1 yesterday, so it was great timing, because Soulcaster 2 was released today and I’m happy. For those who don’t know, Soulcaster was one of the best Indie games on the service.
In both games, you play a wizard who can summon three souls. There’s an archer, who deals the highest damage but requires an unobstructed line of sight, she is best on wide open maps. Second is the knight, who has the highest defense and is used to protect other units. He is best blocking path ways and doors. Finally, there’s a bomber unit who throw explosive bombs over walls, except that the bombs can blow up the bomber, hurting allies as well as enemies. He is best behind walls. You start with the ability to summon three units, but can summon up to five by the end of the game. You can also summon multiples of one unit.
You travel from level to level killing stuff and pulling switches to open door. You’ll find money to buy upgrades from merchants as well as health points, damage entire map scrolls and extra unit summons.
The developers have thankfully employed an “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. The game play in Soulcaster 2 is virtually identical to Soulcaster 1 and that’s not a bad thing. The game is hard, but not unfair, so you never want to throw your controller at the screen.
What has changed is that the levels are bigger and more colorful, with even more puzzles and traps. Plus the levels you do encounter have more environmental variety that the narrow sewers and fields of the first game. There isn’t one negative change to be found.
In conclusion, Soulcaster 2 doesn’t mess with the formula, but it didn’t need to. Therefore, I recommend it because its more the same strategy goodness, just bigger and better.
